Van Duzer Scholarship

The Van Duzer Scholarship was established in 1967 and expanded in 1979 when it was designated in memory of Albert and Mildred Van Duzer with the stipulation that these scholarships be awarded to worthy HSU students, giving preference to students majoring or active in the creative arts. Applicants must be currently enrolled at HSU.

Martin Wong Foundation Annual Scholarship Competition

This award recognizes excellence with two prizes in Painting and Ceramics. Martin Wong attended Humboldt State University from 1964 through 1968 when he graduated. He was a familiar figure in Old Town Eureka where he often drew portraits of friends and others using his "Human Instamatic" drawing technique. In 1978 he moved to New York, continued painting and began his career in earnest. His powerful paintings are in many important collections including those of the New Museum, the Whitney, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. At Martin Wong's request, in 1999 a retrospective of his paintings and drawings "The Eureka Years" was presented at the Third Street Gallery. The Humboldt State Art Department is proud to present these awards as a legacy of the visionary artist: Martin Wong. Martin passed away in Fall of 1999, shortly before his Third Street Gallery exhibition opened.
